Waste management survey in Kodi

As we all aware about environmental pollution due to poor waste management in India and our surroundings. Coastal karnataka is blessed with West Coast Ocean region along with large scape of western Ghats. West Coast are mainly covers Dakshina Kannda (Mangalore), Udupi and Uttara Kannada Districts. But unfortunately due to lack of awareness among community and inadequate waste management by concerned authorities.

As far as concerned with Kundapura Taluk which has got 23 Munciple ward out of which 3 wards in Kodi areas are without any proper waste management system found during our International Coastal Clean up Day in the month of September 2013. In this connection FSL INDIA took interest to draw the attention of Muncipality Authorities towards Kodi areas. We also had Meeting with Kodi Bearys College Management, NSS wing, FSL Volunteers and ward counselors to do find some solutions to put an end to the present mismanagement practice. Accordingly we met Municipality President Mrs.Kalavathi, she has agreed for our initiation to undertake an survey to know about first hand information of the community.

As a collective effort this resulted in taking up Community Based Random Sample Survey on 11.3.14 covering 251 households with the active participation of each and everyone. As we planned for Random Sample survey in 3 wards of Kodi is being divided in to 6 hamlets to reach maximum Households. Overall its 72% of the households are willing to pay Rs.30 per month to have Municipality Waste disposal system. Hoping to see the oceans are free from debris and contributesfor caring for marine mammals , Green and Clean sea shore Roads, surroundings and communities.
